Toilets and Flushable Wipes

Toilets and Flushable Wipes

Flushable Wipes are becoming increasingly popular, especially during COVID and toilet paper being low in stock across the country. People began to look for other options for personal hygiene during the pandemic.

But these flushable wipes are actually resulting in dangerous and expensive issues for plumbing fixtures inside homes. Even when they are labeled “flushable”, they most definitely are not as advertised. Toilet paper is made to disintegrate into pipes and sewage systems, whereas flushable wipes are not made with this intent. Flushable wipes are typically made with synthetic materials that take much longer to break down over time. This actually poses an extreme risk to town and city sewer pipes, so even if they flush down your toilet, they end up clogging sewers.

But They Say “Flushable”!?

Companies are currently able to label wipes as “flushable” or “septic-safe” simply because there are no rules or regulations restricting them from doing so. Since these wipes take a longer amount of time to break down, clogged pipes and blockages occur more frequently. After you flush those wipes, they can get caught up with other items in the sewer lines. Paper towels, floss, cotton swabs etc are all popular items that also lead to plumbing clogs. When your home is at risk of plumbing blockages, it means it will translate to heavy plumbing bills to fix those plumbing pipes.

Just because you CAN flush it, does not mean you SHOULD flush it.
